Mayweather vs. Maidana: Latest Betting Lines

Updated: May 3, 2014

The boxing world will once again turn its attention to Las Vegas tomorrow night as Floyd Mayweather hits the ring to tussle with Marcos Maidana.  Mayweather will attempt to unify the 147-pound titles against the current WBA titleholder in what should at the very least be an entertaining fight card at the MGM Grand.

For better or for worse, the 37-year old Mayweather (45-0) remains the biggest draw in the sport.  With a flawless record and penchant for dominating his opponents, he is also someone you have to make a hefty investment in if you aspire to make some decent money.  Mayweather is currently an 11-1 favorite, a clear indication of how little those in the know rate Maidana as a challenger in comparison to Floyd.

Maidana (35-3) is a fighter who is still in his prime that is known throughout boxing circles for being one of the hardest hitters in the sport.  In fact, his pummeling of Adrien Broner last December is the primary reason he was award the opportunity to take on the best.  A heavy underdog at 13-2, it might be worth taking a flier on Marcos and hope he can land a lucky home-run punch.

Unfortunately for those pining for an upset, the chances of Marcos landing that knockout seem pretty slim.  While Maidana’s punches are punishing and can be thrown from all angles, they are often telegraphed and slow to arrive.  Not the best repertoire when facing a fighter in Mayweather who is well-known for formulating a game plan and utilizing his unmatched defensive skills to avoid the big hits.  He still counterpunches with speed and accuracy, and his ability to rack up points while keeping his opponents at a comfortable distance should enable him to walk away with an easy victory by decision.
